Diplomáticos are considered medium to full strength cigars, and are made using tobacco from the premium Vuelta Abajo region. In 1966, five cigars were introduced, identical in size to the Montecristo Nos.1 to 5.
Diplomáticos was the first new brand of Cuban cigars after the Cuban Revolution produced commercially for public sale. The Cohiba was the first brand created post-Revolution, but was only used for President Fidel Castro's private consumption and for diplomatic gifts, and was not sold on the commercial market until 1982.
